Walk on the Wild Side Photographer Andy Rouse receives top accolade

We are pleased to announce that the photographer of ‘Walk on the Wild Side’,  Andy Rouse, has received an award in the latest Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.

A Walk on the Wild Side         Natural World

Andy has exclusively produced the ‘Walk on the Wild Side’ for Rose for the last 2 years.

His work is also showcased in other calendars, most notably ‘Natural World’,
‘Endangered Species’ and ‘Wildlife in Britain’.

The Competition is an international showcase for the very best photography featuring natural subjects and it is run by the Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine.

Being placed in this competition is something that wildlife photographers, worldwide, aspire to. Many of the prizes are won by professionals like Andy, but amateurs succeed too.  And that’s because achieving the perfect picture is down to a mixture of skill, vision, originality, knowledge of nature and luck.

The actual picture he won the award for is currently on the cover of ‘Natural World 2008’ and was taken on Christmas Day Morning in the Falkland Islands. Andy spent four hours observing this male king penguin defend his mate against the unwanted attentions of a rival male in order to capture this evocative image.

The origins of the competition go back as far as 1964, when the magazine was called Animals and there were just three categories and about 600 entries. But even then it was the leading event of its kind for nature photographers. It grew in stature over the years, and in 1984, BBC Wildlife Magazine and the Natural History Museum joined forces to create the competition as it is today.

There are between 15,000 and 20,000 entries, a major exhibition at the Natural History Museum and exhibitions touring throughout the year. The exhibition tours not only the UK but also worldwide, from the US, the Caribbean and South Africa, through Europe and across to China, Japan and Australia.
